About The Project
Birdseye Energy Storage is a 199 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) planned to support emission-less, cost-effective domestic energy for Adams County. The project will store electricity to deliver when it is most needed. The facility will increase regional grid reliability and lower blackout risk during high demand.
In addition to enhanced energy reliability, the project will create new local jobs during construction and operation, provide increased tax revenue to support essential services, support a more reliable and resilient local energy system that can help moderate future energy costs, and contribute to community organizations through sponsorships and donations.

Phase 1: Permitting & Compliance
Birdseye Energy Storage is currently progressing through the interconnection study process with Xcel Energy, the permitting process with Adams County and in ongoing consultation with the City of Thornton. This phase includes comprehensive onsite diligence and application for all necessary approvals. Following the completion of this process, construction is anticipated to begin in 2028, with a commercial operations date planned for 2029.

Zero-emissions power sources are being built at unprecedented scale, replacing fossil fuel generation. Transportation and industrial sectors are swapping fuels for electricity. Energy storage helps bridge the gap between when electricity is generated and when it is needed, turning intermittent clean energy into dependable power when homes and businesses need it most.
Flexible & Responsive
When charged during periods of excess solar, wind, or hydropower generation and discharged at times of high demand otherwise served by fuel-based generation, energy storage maximizes the use of renewable energy and reduces the carbon intensity of the power system. As storage provides more flexibility to the power system, fuel-based resources can also run less frequently and more efficiently, reducing emissions further.
By storing electricity when it is abundant and delivering when it is needed most, energy storage helps the grid adapt to changing conditions throughout the day.
Batteries are the fastest resource on the grid, providing electricity instantaneously in response to sudden changes in demand or disruptions to supply. In a future with more renewables and increasingly extreme weather, quick ramping from storage will ensure continuity of service.
As renewable energy grows and extreme weather becomes more frequent, energy storage’s rapid response will be essential to maintaining reliable, continuous service. The ability to respond in seconds to changing grid conditions makes energy storage an essential tool for supporting the evolving demands of the power system.
GridStor has demonstrated this capability during a real grid emergency. In November 2024, Goleta Energy Storage was dispatched to help keep the region powered when wildfire-related shutoffs compromised local infrastructure, demonstrating how battery storage can support continuity of service during extreme conditions.

Birdseye Energy Storage is a resilient, clean, and cost-effective solution to an increasing demand for reliable domestic energy.

The Northglenn-Thornton Rotary Club supports the community through sponsoring scholarships for college students, donating food for local food banks, sending youth to annual Rotary leadership camps (RYLA), supporting CASA of Adams and Broomfield Counties, and assisting many more initiatives throughout the year.

Founded in 1904, the Adams County Fair is one of the metro-Denver region’s top annual agricultural events. The 2024 fair attracted 141,000 attendees, making it the largest county fair in Colorado. The Adams County Fair serves the communities of Arvada, Aurora, Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Northglenn, Thornton, and Westminster.

The South Adams Fire Fighters Association supports retired South Adams County volunteer firefighters, has a scholarship program for dependents of firefighters, and supports EMT paramedics and their families dealing with cancer.

Energy storage is generally very low-impact because it requires only a small land footprint, its operations has no emissions, requires little water, and causes negligible traffic impacts. Birdseye Energy Storage is not expected to have significant impacts on local residents, the environment, or cultural resources. -
The project site is strategically located on the grid to optimize energy delivery, reduce congestion-related price spikes, and deliver cost savings to families and businesses. The site was selected because of the high energy demand in the region, Xcel’s expressed need for new electrical capacity, and the ability to interconnect to the electrical grid in this location. The project is being designed based on a comprehensive review including environmental considerations, local regulations, and design constraints.

The location where the power will enter the grid is a substation owned by Public Service Company of Colorado (Xcel Energy). The energy stored at the site is anticipated to be used by local utility customers and to support the utility and state’s clean energy and sustainability goals.

Decommissioning will be initiated if the entire project has not operated for a period of up to three years, or when the project has surpassed its useful lifespan. To ensure this commitment, the project will obtain, for the benefit of Adams County, a bond from a creditworthy entity in an amount equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the estimated net costs to comply with applicable decommissioning and restoration requirements.

The proposed Birdseye Energy Storage is being designed to minimize visual impacts. Neighboring properties will be visually shielded from the project by a combination of setbacks, visual barriers, natural features and native vegetation. In addition, the project will include substantial improvements to the public infrastructure along E. 104th Avenue and McKay Road, including right-of-way widening, sidewalks, streetlights, curb and gutter, and landscaping. As part of the design process, the project has completed a series of visual simulations to further inform the site layout and visual mitigation plans.
Battery projects like the proposed Birdseye Energy Storage do not cause light pollution or otherwise impact dark skies. A limited amount of security lighting near the substation will be shielded, directed downward, and only used during a very limited amount of maintenance activities. -
Yes. Safety is fundamental to all parts of the electrical grid, including battery energy storage. Because the project will be connected to the electrical grid, it will be subject to significant oversight and strict safety regulations that are frequently updated. The project will be monitored 24/7 by trained personnel prepared to maintain safety and respond to emergency events in coordination with local emergency responders as necessary. Our projects are equipped with proven monitoring technology and advanced safety design features, like sensors that monitor battery voltage, current, temperatures, and health, to ensure early detection and mitigation of issues.
